Getting to Cape Coral & Sanibel Island

Arriving by airplane

The closest airport is the Southwest Florida International Airport in Fort Myers (RSW). It accommodates both national and international flights.

There is no transfer service from the airport. The easiest option is to rent a car directly at the airport for the duration of your stay.

To get to downtown Cape Coral, take Interstate 75 N. Then there are 2 options: Take exit 131 and drive over the Cape Coral Bridge or take exit 136 and drive over the Midpoint Bridge to Cape Coral. The distance from the airport to downtown is about 15-20 miles or about 30-40 minutes driving time.
The drive to Sanibel Island is approximately 26 miles from the airport. Take Interstate I-75 N and exit at Exit 131, initially toward Cape Coral. Later, take County Rd 869 and then the Sanibel Causeway from the mainland to the island.

Arriving by car

If you are traveling to Cape Coral by car, e.g. from Washington DC, take I-95 S south and at Jacksonville, take US 301 S as well as I-10 W. In Marion County take I-75 S past Tampa and continue south on I-75 S for about 130 miles. Exit at exit 158 in the direction of Cape Coral.

From the west, such as Tallahassee, take I-10 E and then change to I-75 S at Exit 296A. Continue south to exit 158.

US Entry requirements

For entry into the USA (e.g. with German or Swiss citizenship), a valid electronic entry authorization (ESTA) is required in addition to a valid passport - unless you have a visa. ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) was introduced by the U.S. authorities in January 2009 and applies to all persons wishing to travel to the United States of America within the Visa Waiver Program.
